Alternatively can be patch-type decoration on a supplier cap (style is solid color distressed). Order is around 300 pieces.

I am sort of back on trying to solve this problem, any embroiderer willing to price sewing patches on caps? (I supply both.)

Or experience with heat sealed patches on caps?

Stacy unless your quantity is small or time frame very short it is hard to imagine that it will be lest costly than getting it done at "1 stop shop".....

Otherwise, get patches with heat backing and get them pressed on or find a local "Grammy" who needs a few extra $$$s...

Thanks, Royce!
300 by April 1st and I don't have the patches yet.
I pursued a 1 stop shop but haven't gotten a proof yet and it is getting way to close for my comfort.

I think I am going to look at buying a cap press and going that route in house.

World Emblems did some patches for me recently a LOT faster than expected.

Stacy - If you have an embroidery machine it is easy enough to attach patches - if not just have a local decorator do it.

You just need to create a stitch file that runs around the outside of the patch - perhaps 1/8 of an inch inside the edge. Have it run once and then add in a color change. Then have it run twice more. The first run will give you an outline so you know where to place the patch. A bit of spray adhesive should keep it in place when it gets sewn.

As for thread - use a mono-filament - it is a clear thread sort of like fishing line. You can actually buy it a Walmart. You will want to run it fairly slowly - perhaps 400 stitches per minute - it is pretty quick though since it only takes a couple hundred stitches all told.

Be careful about the cap press route. Be aware how much heat and pressure you need for this. The adhesive is on the back side (obviously) but the heat platen is from the top and most of the patch adhesives take a good deal of heat for a long dwell time. It is not uncommon to need 60 seconds or more to get the adhesive hot enough using a traditional cap press. On shirts you can do these upside down but not on a hat. The biggest risk is that you flatten the embroidery and destroy the appearance.

The real presses for applying patches are called needle board presses. They apply the heat from below which is much faster and much less harmful to the patch.

I would personally do these as Steve said, on the embroidery machine. Really fast, only a couple hundred stitches in most cases. We would double up a hooping team and go after it. Or you can treat it like an applique using a punched patch with no merrowing and attach with a nice satin stitch.

To outsource something like this, consider the local uniform supply shops. They would all have needle board presses for patches on shirts and you might still find one that has a needle board hat press. There are still a few independant shops around.

Try Magic Headwear to supply the complete package. They are great. Otherwise I've used Super Patch for patches but not sure if they sew onto garments.
