Hi there fellow DT'ers!
I have a customer that went through a major re-branding about a year ago. They have tons of wearables that have the old logo embroidered on them. Some are still stored at the company, and others are in the employees' homes, not being worn.

Has anyone tried covering existing embroidery with a patch? I am thinking of an iron-on, without the merrowed edge, so that it does not look like a patch was slapped on.

Most of these people are working in a corporate environment, and we don't want the shirts to look like a maintenance worker's uniform with the standard white patch on it.

If you have done this successfully, or seen it done, please let me know.

Thanks!
Margie

It works in theory better than in application. For one, you need to use a good heat press and probably a press pillow or padding to get adhesion on the uneven, embroidered surface. Then, because of that uneven base, you will get either wearing on the cover patch or worse, it will come loose.

You can still sew on an unmerrowed patch. (It is done like tackle twill.) It is going to work better. It may cost a little more but to get to re-use the items makes it a bargain.

Margie- Part of it will depend on the embroidered logo - if it is big and bulky it will be tougher than if it is small.

I'd recommend sewing on the patch if you go that way - it really is not that big of a deal. We have a few customers that use patches and we do them right on our embroidery machines. The embroidery file is simple - it runs once around the area where the patch would go (so just inside of the patch) in one color so the patch can be placed correctly. The machine stops, put the patch in place, and then start it again - it switches needed to a mono-filament thread (clear like fishing line) and runs a couple times around the patch. It is very easy and quick.

Deepening on the old and new logos it might be possible to just sew the new on top of the old - most likely you would need to add a fill box below. You could also try keeping the old logo and adding the new to a sleeve.

I'd recommend getting 3 of the old shirts and doing up samples of all 3 for the customer - it is relatively easy to do 1-off patches so if you have a good relationship with your local embroiderer they should be able to make up all three for not a whole lot.

Depending on the size of the logo / stitch count and the new logo to be embroidered, there is the option (although somewhat cumbersome) to remove the old embroidered logo.

Thanks for the idea, but the old logo is too big to remove w/o ruining the shirt.

There's no phone number on their site, but I tracked them down anyway. Gil had one digit wrong on his post to me, but no worries :)
Jeremy at Stitch Designers is working on this now for us.

Thanks for the link, though!
