FYI You should speak with Jason Black from Boundless Network, they are unique distributorship based out of Austin and have built their ordering & marketing software off the salesforce.com platform, it is an all-in-one solution for your customers and yourself, guaranteed they have the best software in the industry and they are a great company. I think they are licensing some of the modules so you don't have to join the organization. They also have Canadian affiliates so the program can work with Cdn taxes & suppliers. Not everyone can become part of Boundless you need to fit their mold and culture.

We use Salesforce and it is great. I don't know how we would manage without it.

If your technical and familiar with Open Source web software, it's hard to beat SugarCRM CE (Community Edition), which is free to use and a very capable and popular.
If your not technical, Salesforce and SugarCRM Pro are the 2 i'd look at ... both have on-demand paid options that include support and plug-ins for MS Outlook.
Boundless Networks' solution sounds very interesting.
Also wanted to pass along one of the most useful applications I've ever used ... Contact Capture. It allows you to highlight someone's signature from an email, PDF, web page, whatever ... hit Ctrl + C-C and it captures each piece of data into proper fields, like First Name, Company, Email, Fax ... and it's almost perfect everytime ... very impressive. When you start using a CRM software, quickly moving contact info into the system is critical, and this software will export the contacts you capture directly into all major CRM systems, including Salesforce and SugarCRM, or just export to a CSV file ... big thumbs up !
Free to use as well ... http://www.broadlook.../contactcapture
