Well I installed Windows 7 last night and no where in the book did it say it would take a few hours......I thought I could get it done while watching the 1st part of the late news.....Little did I know I would have to endure Conan O'Brien and some.....But the install went fine...
The 1st disappointment for me is the lack of a side bar.....Yes they have improved the gadgets but I liked they way they docked in Vista.......Now you have to manually re-size the window beside it so part of your window is not covered up....
2nd thing, my older scanner no longer works.....Canon thinks it is too old to bother writing drivers for it....So for the time being I will have to use it on another computer...
3rd thing, the backup is now way bigger than my old hard drive....My old backup used about 1/3 of an 80gb hard drive and now that is too small....Fortunately Walmart has some 1tb ones for 99.00....

If your old scanner ran on XP.... Windows 7 has XP mode
"XP Mode consists of the Virtual PC-based virtual environment and a fully licensed copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3). It will be made available, for free, to users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions"

I listen to a podcast by a tech guy. He has preached if you are putting window 7 or any version of windows on a computer with a previous version, you should always do a clean install.
Back up your hard drive, wipe it clean and re-stall. Cleanest way.
Most folks who want to get Windows 7 are buying new pcs, because their cycle is up

My new computer has Windows 7 and the scanner won't work either. I figure the scanner is too old and Windows 7 just won't accept it.

I'm a mac guy but I heard that windows 7 is an outdated mac.
By the way does anyone know how to get sage on a Mac without using a virtual machine. (I tried Wine but it didn't work)

You heard this from whom? Being that you are a MAC guy it wouldn't be a little biased bird telling you this would it?

I've installed it. Had Vista (didn't like it much). Everything went very smoothly.
Took a long time, but everything (except my scanner) works fine without any re-installs.

I did a clean install of the 64 bit Professional version, and I love it! It is way better than Vista. So far all of my hardware has worked great, I was planning on having to use the XP mode for a bunch of stuff, but I haven't even installed/used that part at all.
I was convinced that my next computer was going to be a Mac since I hated Vista so much, but now I"m not sure. I need a little more time with 7, but I'm already considering buying a new PC for home.

I've installed Win 7 Ultimate on 5 machines and there is no question it's the fastest install of a MS OS to date. BUT if the computer has any hardware or memory problems, the install will not only take forever, in many cases it will simply fail ... 2 install failures so far on older machines ... probably bad memory modules.
An alternative to using the Win 7 backup is using RichCopy, which is a GUI of the command line backup RoboCopy. It's is extremely fast and highly recommended ... great with external hard drives and to other computers on the network!

How old were the older machines. After a while just from use, and installing and uninstalling your computer, you are going to get bit rot.

The older machines I tried to install Win 7 on were both P4 2.8 ... a Latitude laptop and an Optiplex desktop ... both were heavily used, so their time was over. That said, I installed XP back onto them without issue ... unfortunately.
