Just when I thought everything was going good it seems my computer caught a bug......Virus....Pooched Hard Drive.....Not quite sure.....

But the good thing is it appears my backups are sound.....At least Carbonite is.....But it seems my external hard drive was not backing up at planned so it is quite out of date....

My 2 most important files are my email and Quickbooks.....And they fine.....so aside from the frustration this will require to work through, all will be well....

I was fortunate that when my desktop computer died in November, I had ordered a new Dell just the week before.

I was without my primary computer for a week, and only had limited access to my backup as I didn't choose to download my files from the external backup.

Once the new computer came in, my resident IT geek (oldest son/professional ITer) who lives just 4 miles away, installed the old hard drive into the new computer, and it's all good to go, with more speed and storage.

And the Dell Vostro computer came pre-loaded with MS Office 2007 and the full Acrobat software (not just the reader) for under $800. Those 2 programs sell for nearly $700 retail.

I think I am well on my way to getting back to normal.....

I bought a new desktop that was on closeout....C$785.00 all in....12% tax in our area and computer recycle fee.......Comes with 8gb ram which should be big improvement over 3gb....Video card has 2 monitor outputs (DVI and VGA)....Comes with Vista Home Premium 64 with an upgrade to Win 7.0 coupon.... http://www.cdata.ca/...enom9150eb.html

I am downloading copy of my backup from Carbonite......Darn slow but working.....And if I need single files, I can log in remotely and copy them 1 at a time....So I am in good shape....

Get out of VISTA as soon as possible. It is a pain. DO it now before you load everything on the computer.

I have 2 other computers running Vista and have had way less problems than I did with XP....

And as far as upgrading to Windows 7.0......It will take several weeks to get the upgrade from Microsoft so there is no way to wait....

You are in the minority. It's so bad that Dell now offers a paid DOWNGRADE on new computers. They will take you from vista down to windows XP for like $100 I think. Vista has been a disaster and the industry has come to terms with that I think.

Fortunately for me, my new Dell came complete with Windows 7 and Vista downgrade pre-loaded. Seven is working fine for me, with a lot of nice features.

Makes me want to rip the top shelf off my old-school computer desk, so I can have dual monitors with the one stacked on top of the other.

I've got everything necessary for dual screens - except space on or around my desk for the second one.

My IT son placed the order for me and added all the key features, including maxing out the RAM memory, insuring the appropriate video card, etc.

However, it's maxed out as a business computer (dual core, mega gigs of hard drive, etc), not optimized for gaming, etc.

It's dual-screen ready, I'm just not ready to change out the desk in my cubby hole next to the bookcases/storage units.

Oh Royce, that really stinks.... I recently had some type of wierd icon appear on my desktop. It may been there for a while, and I never noticed it. I paid Nortons to remove it and do a PC tuneup for around $140.00. They said I had virus' on my system, but I highly doubt it. Why do I pay a yearly subscription fee to Nortons for my Nortons 360 software - when virus' still get through my system - supposively. I wanted to know what virus' they found, but they didn't have a specific answer for me. I do a virus scan almost everyday on my system and the virus scan cannot detect the "so-called virus' I had on my system, yet when they went through my system for $140.00 , they were able to find them.
This really behooves me.... Good luck getting your new system in order Royce...IDEAGUY

Jeffrey,

You might want to check into AVG anti-virus program. It keeps my home computers protected.

And TrendMicro will do a free scan of your computers for you. Check them out at www.TrendMicro.com .

The problem with Carbonite and I use them too, is they won't extend the back up to external hard drives.

So you need to make sure that whatever is on your external is on your main computer so carbonite will back it up.

Most anti virus is too cumbersome and loaded with junk.

Do you have a router? That is a great anti virus intself cutting the bad guys off early.

Actually, I never had a problem with Nortons. I use their program all the time over the years. This is the first time that this had occured. How long have you had AVG? Thanks Dennis...IDEAGUY

Interesting.... I have an external drive - but I probably should use a service like Carbonite as well. Do you not use an anti-virus? I don't have a router. The computer here is not networked....IDEAGUY

I have a suggestion for you regarding your dual monitors and space.

I bought a 37" television that I will be using for my demos at some upcoming trade shows, and have been testing it. I am completely hooked on this big screen thing, and you can mount it on the wall off your desk and free up space for your second monitor. I am redesigning my office to include a flat panel TV on the wall that I will use as my primary monitor.

What is more - I don't have to scramble for my reading glasses (aka my binoculars) any more. YAY

My philosophy - Go big or go home :)

I am just trying to hang on til the end of the year. My son is leaving for a week of Navy boot camp for his Navy Sea Cadets. We have to leave at 4am Christmas morn to get him there on the 26th. It is fun watching him stress out over it. Of course you know he is almost 14. We will go get him in Pensicola Florida on the 2nd of January. If you are curious about the program take a look at http://www.navyseacadets.org
