From the home page:

These are the 200 most used thread tags:

argghh, llanyards, earthquake, bad taste, puppy (among many other bizarre ones)

I thought "ideas" was the #1 thread tag. What happened?

I personally love "argghh" and think it should remain.

Brought over from another thread . . .

Scott,
(a) Why are you so obsessed with tags?
(b) The only way to see tags at the bottom of a thread is to start a thread (if you can't find it by searching) The problem with searching for BNI is that it's only 3 letters and VB requires a minimum of 4 letters to search.
© Why are you so obsessed with tags?

(a) Because the search function on this forum sucks. And tags are a great way to organize & manage content on this forum. And because every DT member can contribute to said organization & management. And because when members begin to add tags, suggestions of existing tags come up for the member to select.

(b) Wrong. There are at least two other spots to search for/see tags.

1. http://www.distributortalk.com/forum/ (scroll down)

2. http://www.distribut...com/forum/tags/

3. Within the Search function (as you've mentioned)

4. Within the Advanced Search function (as you've mentioned)

© See (a) and refer to this post:

The other thing that you will find if you check the new posts long enough is that (a commonly repeated thread topic) seems to come up every few months. That being said it would be great if there were better search functions - I know that the site is constrained by by what the software maker provides so this is not a dig at the site or Chris, but at least it seemed like a search would turn up nothing, and then once a thread was started all sorts related posts would show up on the bottom of the page. I would suggest that this is part of why your question has not received more responses - I would imagine that many regulars look at it and think "asked and answered" - not something that you would know.

So dig around - you may have to read a number of different threads, but there already is quite a bit of info on (this common topic) that has been covered the past few years.

Steve's post speaks volumes. Others have taken their valuable time in the past to provide valuable insight on this forum (i.e. "asked and answered"). Tags help organize that valuable insight for the benefit of all.

Looks like someone missed Talk like a pirate day.

The argghh would make so much more sense.

Chris . . .

The beauty of tagging is that you can add "argghh" to that pirate thread yourself.

In other words, the someone who missed it is you!

Does that even make sense considering I am the one who refered to it.

In the first post you refered to it as bizarre...

It was to set an example on how any DT member can add tags to threads.

"argghh" was automatically created when Chris Miller started a thread about his frustrations with UPS.

Since then, I've added the "argghh" tag to any thread of a frustrating nature.

I realize that the "argghh" tag isn't going to necessarily bring any value to DT members . . . it's done moreso for comic relief.

However, adding tags like "food gifts", "candy", "compensation", "referrals", and "networking groups" where appropriate is going to be of great value to DT members (and possibly yourself).

With great power comes great responsibilty . . . I'm none too happy with the member that added the tag "asi sucks" to a thread that had absolutely nothing to do with ASI (besides, there's already a tag for ASI . . . why complicate matters?).

I see. I did not know there were any other threads tagged with arrrgh.

I simply thought back to the pirate day.

I did not realize that there were so many frustrating or arguement based threads to make it #1.

It's not #1. It goes based on size. The bigger the word, the more popular it is:

Or when someone tags it with "llanyards", when perhaps they mean "lanyards" although I don't see the connection to this thread...

It's a tag cloud, folks . . . so that means you can contribute by adding them.

As you proceed to key in a tag, suggestions for existing tags will appear. Please select the appropriate existing tag.

To those visiting this forum after perhaps a lengthy absence . . .

Tags help organize content on this forum.

When you start a thread, you can add tags. Or, you can add tags to any thread by clicking on "Edit Tags" found beneath the last post of the thread.

As you proceed to key in a tag, suggestions for existing tags will appear. Please select the appropriate existing tag.

Tags work when the entire forum community participates. Please help make DistributorTalk a better place to browse.

The tag cloud now only shows the top 100 tags? 200 was much better . . . especially when you consider how diverse the product is in this industry.

As with any major upgrade, there are things that need to be tweaked. I like the new look. It is cleaner and does not have the banner ads in the middle of the posts. I am sure that will change because that is prime real estate and we want to have DT continue for us as a free service.

Good work, Chris. Hope you got some rest on the 4th.

Back to 200 on the tags. If you visit www.distributortalk.com all articles on the homepage also take tags and will come up within the tag searches.

Rest? Not a bit since I started all of this. :/

Thanks, Chris.

The tag cloud found on the right of this page displays even less than 100 tags. It'd be great if it displayed the top 200.

Went ahead and bumped that one up too. Plus it will appear throughout the forums too. Might have to be tweaked in the near future because we have to make room for our advertiser's ads, but we'll make it work somehow.

A forum is for 'em! Never forget that.

Let's see if this helps stop creation of new threads on credit card processing and company stores.

This forum has tons of tips shared over years. The tag cloud is a great way to steer members towards that content and encourage them to add their own insight to existing threads.

Thanks for all of the tag maintenance.
