A niece actually got me on it..i thought it was for college kids. I have a personal account and incredibly increased my contacts after about 4 weeks...just by digging into friends of friends of friends and them digging into their friends etc....it grew by leaps and bounds. Eventually, i kept adding more info into my profile..and only about 3 weeks ago put my website. Last week I made contact with two high school friends and a friend from my first job. One's a bank VP, one is a Worldwide Marketing Director and one is an Asst. Dean of a College. And all have asked for marketing suggestions.
My suggestion...start slow and see how fast you can grow. You might be amazed. I was!

You can't look at anyone's page who isn't on your list either.
I MUCH prefer Myspace- I have friends, relatives, old friends from high school, people I haven't seen in 20 yrs, people from DT and places I used to work.. I love rearranging my profile, adding pics, songs, videos, bulletins, and getting comments on them- it just makes so much more practical sense to me,. I also love finding the "perfect" comment for people- there are some great ones out there!
What am I doing wrong with facebook?

I changed my status one day and said "Free XXX for Referral and Order" and I got a referral I'm working on now. Since they were friend and friends...I can use humor to network. This just helps me not have to pick up the phone.
I am using every available social network tool and techonology to market business. I save gas, i make friends, i get referrals, people get prizes from me..they tell friends. Where else can you advertise "$100 for referral with order?"
I put up pictures of my grandson and my hot selling products. Humor is a big part of my profile.

This is the way business 'ought' to be conducted and it's the preferred method of the up and coming generation. If you want to be cutting edge, use social networking sites such as facebook, myspace (though a bit more juvenile in appearance and features), Linkedin (DON'T MISS this one), Twitter, etc, etc.
Each has their general audience profile and Linkedin is very professional if you want to reach that audience. Twitter is popular with educators if that's your target. Of course, all of them are useful but it's best to focus on building your presence in one area unless you have just gobs of time on your hands.
P.S. Wanna know the next big wave?? Keep an eye on the 40+ some virtual world sites out there like SecondLife.com. Don't think these are just gaming sites. You'd be surprised. $1.3 million per day is being transacted on SecondLife around the globe. That's in U.S. dollars (not virtual money). Pretty cool. But beware, it's not for dabblers just yet. Get familiar with it now and you will be ahead of the game in the coming years when everyone is visiting the world wide web virtually in 3D.
Don't believe me? Google "secondlife" in the news and follow the headlines from time to time. See what every Ivy League school has been involved in since 2004 along with IBM and other multi national conglomerates. Awesome!
