I've been contacted by a few people who wanted to discuss firearms on DT but they didn't feel right starting off such a topic because of how people might react. Since I really don't care, I figured I would be the first. Please feel free to post about any guns you may own, or want to discuss.

I recently just sold off most of my guns. I had a S&W, military & Police compact .40, a Glock 22 (.40 MO Hwy Patrol Trade-in) and a S&W Sigma 9mm. I also let go my Mossberg 500, 12 gauge shotgun.

My baby now is a Springfield Armory XD-9 Tactical 9mm which is kept for personal protection. Plenty of safety features, great feel in the hand and won't take out the neighbors if it ever needed to be fired indoors. Loaded with hydrashox I am more than comfortable with my ability to protect myself and my family should I ever have to.

So there you go... the gun thread is live. Please tell us about your toys.

Chris, I jsut have a BB gun and keep that at my office away from my kids.

You have the right to bear arms, but with young kids in the home - I suggest you keep your collection out of the house...

Sigh... can we have a single thread without it turning into an education session for Chris? Just one single thread. I know, i know it's the parent in you, you sound like my mother with the kids being around water, up high on the deck, etc.

I own firearms to protect my children. I won't go into what's done to keep them away from the kids, that's common sense..... let's just say my guns are impossible for them to get their hands on.

Ok back to the thread...... Christopher has been taught again :D

As one person who lectures you too often (sorry Chris), I'll chime in.

I have a handgun, but I won't mention what kind or where I keep it. The former because I always get people telling me why it isn't good enough or what else I should buy. I'm sure they mean well, but I find the conversation tiresome sometimes. The latter because...well, just because.

But I do keep ammo at different locations around the house, just in case I end up in a different room and need to reload. Now THAT doesn't sound like the Isa you think you know, does it?

I've had the entirely unpleasant experience of an intruder entering my bedroom late at night, way back when I married and my husband was away on a ski trip. If I didn't have a firearm, I would bet any amount that the outcome would have been different, and worse.

As far as gun safety, I too get lots of advice from people who don't keep guns. That's fine, as long as we can have a reasonable discussion and listen to each other's points of view. All I can tell you is that I am quite certain that other than the incident above, I have never considered drawing, brandishing, threatening, or using my gun on someone despite some pretty awful times. Had he not fled, I would have shot the intruder and dealt with the consequences later. Would I shoot to kill? I'm going to shoot to stop, and if that means kill, that's what I'm prepared to do.

I know for sure that no other weapon I can think of will offer me the same protection, and that the police, while speedy to respond any time I have ever called, would not be speedy enough to stop someone from doing harm.

I do think guns are a problem in our nation. I don't know what to do about that, but I'm not willing to give up what I consider my level of safety for a political statement.

My newest purchase is a Stag Arms Model 2T... an AR15 type rifle. Some folks, Nolan included, wonder why I would purchase such a gun. It is used for various purposes, such as home defense, varmint elimination & recreational shooting. The rails on it allow the quick connect/disconnect of various options, such as different scopes, flashlight, laser, night vision scope, etc.

Such a gun is incredibly fun to shoot, especially with it's holographic site. As far as varmints, I have a lot of coyotes around but they don't bother me or my horses. They will kill the neighbors calves so I might consider helping them control that population, however they remind me too much of my dogs. My main concern is the danged armadillos. They come out at night & dig holes in my pastures.. holes that my horses can break a leg in. Those beasts have to go.

I will post some pictures of some of my guns tonight.

My husband is an avid hunter and gun collector. He has many guns, locked up in his gun safe. We have always kept one loaded hand gun unlocked for our protection. Our daughter has always been told where it was, and why not to touch it. When she was <6 she used to watch her dad and great grandfather shoot targets, and was well aware of the damage a gun can do. For us, she was taught the dangers of a gun and had enough respect to never touch one (unless daddy showed her his newest).
Isa, never thought about keeping amo in different places in the house, good idea!

Sig Sauer P229 loaded with .40 caliber ammo. Safety precautions taken.

Used 100% for protection of my home and family.

I live in the heart of Dallas. People will break your front door down at midnight without regard to whether you are home or not and take what they want including your life.

I also own numerous other shotguns and rifles and few other pistols, but the rest are locked up in a safe.

Rick & Robert..... would you care to elaborate a little? We've been considering a relocate to TX for a while now. Looking for some place warmer without being too close to the ocean. I wouldn't want to move some place that isn't safe though.

We're looking for a place where we can get some land without breaking the bank. Any suggestions?

I know this is in the "lounge" but I think a discussion like this does not belong on a professional board like this....Chris I am curious why this was done here rather than Promonexus?....I am sure the politial and/or Iraq discussions have done more harm to this board than good........Many of us here just want to come and discuss business and not the rest of the "dribble"....

I agree on the politics and religion, i've never allowed them on any forum I have owned and most don't either. We all have the industry in common though and sometimes its cool to find other things we have in common too.

As with anything in the lounge, you are not required to read. It's your clicking finger. :)

1. Wow, something I now like about Chris, with the usual caveat of safety first.

2. Royce-Guns isn't religion or politics but can turn into that unless the thread stays just with guns.

3. Isa-I hate that stupid slogan, but I think that people are more the problem than guns

4. Chris-Don't move to California since they are trying to get a bill passed so that ammunition must be identified with markings. Forget about everything else they try to control here.

Property in Dallas is very expensive. You get little house for your money and pay a huge premium for the dirt. Suburban sprawl is getting larger and larger, but you way more bang for your buck in the suburbs. Dallas is very cosmopolitan but Ft Worth is very laid back and has a much more friendly theme.

Crime in Dallas is terrible. It does not matter where in Dallas you live. Suburbs are much better when it comes to crime rates.

Dallas public schools are terrible as well. We send our kids to parochial school by both necessity and desire.

That being said, I would NEVER live anywhere but here. I despise the cookie cutter suburbs where every house looks the same and every intersection which has the same retail strips. I find that boring.

Based on some of your political leanings, you might look at Austin. It has a great vibe. It is very laid back, more liberal and has a great feel.

You could not pay me enough to live in Houston. I do not have one positive thing to say about Houston.

Don't want to switch this to real estate, but just curious as to what you think is expensive. California as you know is crazy. So what would be the going buy price in the burbs for something like 1800 sq ft, 3 br, 2 bath, good size yard with pool run.

I remember years ago telling someone in Houston what my house was worth and they thought I lived in a mansion. With all my travels to Houston there isn't anything that struck me more than the humidity, constant humidity.

Dallas is probably about $175 to $250 a square foot for a nice area. The suburbs are probably more than half that.

Our values are NOT like California's, but our values did not go straight up the last 5 years and thus ours have not cratered. Our are pretty close to stable.

Houston is extremely humid. San Antonio is very humid. Dallas is humid. Austin is humid. You NEVER get used to it. 100 degree summers with high humidity is not fun.

In the area of MO where I live that would run you about $180,000. 1/4 acre / 10k sqft would be considered large in most subdivisions in and around St. Louis / St. Charles county. The pool would actually hinder you around here, not many want to maintain them (we actually have to close them down for most of the year)

I have a cousin who lived near Sacramento and she said our house would be worth about half a million there. It's too bad that's the land cost because i'd gladly rebuild this sucker there.

We don't want to love in the burbs anymore..... looking for 5-10 acres and around 2000 sq ft 4 bed 2 bath would suffice.

San Antonio is VERY affordable compared to most major metropolitan areas... and our Hill Country is just a few miles away so you could enjoy living in the country but having a city nearby. Our economy is going pretty strong with more new buildings going up than I have seen in 18 years. Labor is cheaper here than most cities too, with machine operators for example pulling in $6.50 to about $8.00.

This means our proportion of "haves" to "have nots" is probably higher than average to say the least, but crime does not seem to be a major issue here... drunk driving, yes, violent crime, not so much.

typical 1800 sq ft house with pool in a good area would run you about $165k ... of course you could pay alot more depending on the neighborhood.... but we cap out at about 400k.... anything more than that and you are REALLY living the high life!!!!

Guns are common here, with State Law allowing for handguns to be carried with proper licensing..... so most businesses have "no guns allowed" signage on their front doors... but except for some gang violence in certain parts of town you don't hear about many shootings here, especially in the downtown area where tourism is our lifeblood, the police are extremely active to prevent bad publicity.

Well then those folks that only want to talk about business need to stay away from the lounge, just as folks with kids need to block porn channels from their tv. The very nature of discussions in the lounge is that of non business activities.... be it photography, tv shows, guns or pork butt. It is here we get to know each other as individuals... not just business men & women.

I've got a friend selling exactly that right now in Holly Springs (where I live). Not that I want you in my hometown. Nicole & the kids would be welcome however. :D
